Autumn...my most favorite time of year. Where Summer usually leaves my lethargic with it's overbearing heat, Autumn always fills me with vitality and energy. I revel in the merry dance of trees changing their dancing gowns and leaves doing their merry dance in the soft, crisp winds. Nathaniel Hawthorne echoed how I feel when he said, "I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by staying in the house. So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air." So here we are at our beloved Wishcasting Wednesday and Jamie asks 'What do you wish for Fall?' ![]() I wish to continue our nature walks and observe the beauty of all around us. I wish to encourage my son by bringing some of that beauty in like we have on our nature table. I wish to enjoy apple picking, corn mazes and pumpkin patches with him and the rest of my clan. I wish to preserve some of that goodness in the form of apple sauce, corn relish and pureed pumpkin for breads and pies as the days grow colder and the nights grow longer. And as the nights grow longer, I wish to create more ecourse and goodies to connect to people through the dark days of winter. In my part of the world it's Autumn harvest festival season My sweet little town had their weekend festival set up with rides, artists sharing their wares, entertainment and food... you know the food that is so bad for you the only way you can get away with eating it is to walk around with it? Several days ago, my son and I decided to collect some leaves, nuts and seeds to add to our nature table. We laid out our goodies and thought no more of it. Imagine our surprise when we noticed we had some new friends move in with the leaves! ![]() These fine fellows are named Pip and Pebble. They must have been mixed up in the leaves we brought into our home. They told us they are gnomes who live in the deep in the earth and near old trees. They help take care of nature and only appear to people who's hearts of full of love. They've decided to stay for a while, provided we keep them informed about the changes happening in outside every day. Perhaps they'll share their stories with us all if we take the time to listen... Today is the day I offer you some of my favorites songs and videos that have fed my spirit and filled my soul. Soul Food. I hope it feeds your spirit too. Acknowledging the things done, and left undone. Seeing what still needs tending through the coming winter months and what has run it's course. Mabon (the Autumnial Equniox) is a time of "balance" days and nights. We come out of the busy outward focused time of summer and start the journey inward by honoring our personal harvest. For me, this time always seems like an in breath before the busy-ness of the holiday season starts to get underway. On a personal level, I use this time for honoring my journey through the past few months and taking a look ahead to set some new intentions for what qualities I want to nurture to help me balance on my inward winter journey. ![]() This will be the first year I formally celebrate with my son. He will get to light the candle during ritual and lead some Autumn songs. Since first harvest, we've been going on daily nature walks, observing the changes in the behavior of the geese and ducks in our neighborhood pond, watching the trees, learning their names and picking out our favorites. Today we'll be making seed cakes and taking some around to those trees to hang for the birds (we'll save some for the winter months). And if the weather continues to be nice, we'll end the day by going to the County Fair to see what other people have harvested during the year and to celebrate with rides and funnel cake! So here we are darlings back for another Wishcasting and Jamie asks the question
What do you wish to immerse yourself in? This week the answer is simple. I wish to immerse myself in a great book. The kind that I can't stop reading until I get to the end of the chapter and then look up and realize it's 5 am and I have to be up by 7 in the morning. I read tons of stuff...or at least listen to unabridged audiobooks a lot thus keeping my hands free for knitting projects....totally counts as reading, right? Of course it does! And though I've nearly reached my goal reading/listening to 40 books this year, I've not been completely absorbed by any of the books I've read/listened to. The books have been good and very enjoyable, but they haven't created epic worlds in my mind that I didn't want to leave. It's been a while since I've been that way with any book the last time I remember was with the last 'Harry Potter' book. Not that I'm looking to get into an epic series....just a really engrossing read. |
